Why it's free

Every metronome app worth using charges a monthly fee for a click. POCKT doesn't, and there's no mechanism for it to start: no servers to pay for, no investors to pay back, no accounts to monetize. One developer who plays, funding it himself. There is nothing to sell you.

Most free apps turn into something else. This one gets better instead. The people using it — teachers, working players — say what's off, and it gets fixed. That's the whole model.

Tell us what's wrong with it

That's not a line. If something's off — the feel of the dial, a sound, the tuner on your instrument — say so, and say it plainly. A blunt email is more useful than a polite one. [email protected], or @pockt.metronome on Instagram, where the people using it talk about what they want next.

What it does

Timing, measured

The click is driven by a native audio clock, and the timing was measured rather than estimated. Across 364 beat intervals at tempos from 80 to 151 BPM:

0.02 msMedian inter-onset error
0.09 ms99th percentile
< 0.11 msDrift over 72 beats

For reference, a single frame of 60 fps video is 16.7 ms. The raw onset data and measurement notes are available to any writer who wants to check the figures; email the address below.

Common questions

Is POCKT really free?

Yes. No cost, no in-app purchases, no subscription, no ads, no account. There are no servers to pay for and no investors to pay back, so there is no mechanism for it to start charging.

What tempo range does it cover?

20 to 400 BPM in single-BPM steps. The weighted dial gives one haptic detent per BPM and never skips a value.

Does it include a tuner?

Yes — a chromatic strobe tuner that runs alongside the click, with reference pitch from A = 432 to 442 Hz. The click mutes automatically while you tune. It works for guitar, bass, violin, brass, woodwind and voice.

How accurate is the timing?

Median inter-onset error of 0.02 ms across 364 measured intervals, with drift under 0.11 ms over 72 beats. The figures above are measured, not claimed.

Does it collect any data?

No. The App Store privacy label reads “Data Not Collected.” The microphone is used only for the tuner and the looper, and nothing leaves the phone.

Does it work on iPad or Mac?

It's built for iPhone, and also runs on iPad, Apple Silicon Macs and Apple Vision Pro. It needs iOS 15.1 or later.
